How ETTOL is run
ETTOL is run by GenEd Labs Ltd. Its ratings are GenEd Labs' independent, evidence-based opinion of what each company publicly documents about its tools, on the date shown.
Ownership and funding
ETTOL is owned and funded by GenEd Labs Ltd. No company pays for its rating.
Who decides
Victoria Hedlund, founder of GenEd Labs, sets the method and the rules that every judgement follows.
How judgements are made
- Every tool is assessed against the same method.
- Only published sources count: the company's own pages and documents, and official, academic and school sources. Anything behind a login or sent on request does not count.
- Each tool's page shows the date it was last checked. Sources are being added to each page.
- A low rating means something is not publicly documented. It does not mean the company does not do it.
Keeping paid work separate
Providers can pay for space on their own tool page to add their own material. That space is marked as paid, and it never changes a rating.
GenEd Labs also offers ETTOL Evaluate, a service that supports companies' design work. When a company uses Evaluate, its ETTOL rating is checked by someone other than Victoria Hedlund. Using Evaluate never changes a rating.
Changes and corrections
Every change to a published band is recorded on the changes page, newest first. If something we have published is wrong, we check it, correct it, and record what changed and when.

What is being set up
The ETTOL EdTech Safety Collective, a group of educators and advisers, is in development. Some members have already agreed to take part, and their details will be added here once arrangements are complete.
