Legal, independence and corrections

No statutory scheme rates the design of edtech tools. ETTOL's ratings are GenEd Labs' honestly held opinion. Each one rests on the published evidence shown with it, judged by a method built on Victoria Hedlund's experience across education, teacher education, research and technology. These ratings are GenEd Labs' independent, evidence-based opinion of what each tool publicly documents on the date shown. A low rating means something is not publicly documented, not that the provider does not do it privately.

The same applies to the child safety band. It is our opinion of how much of what the Department for Education's product safety standards ask for we found on the provider's published pages on the date shown. It is not a safety rating, a certification, or a finding that a product does or does not meet those standards in practice.

The warning sign beside a band marks where the provider's own published material describes something one of those standards asks providers to avoid. It is based on that material as published on the date shown.

Product names belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify the tools. Ratings are published in the public interest and are not legal advice.

Corrections and removal

We assess what providers publish. A company can withdraw its tool from the board. The tool's name stays, with the date it was withdrawn. We do not remove a tool or change a rating because of a threat.

If something we have published is inaccurate, tell us and show us where. We will check it, correct it, and record what changed and when.

Apart from a provider withdrawing its tool, we remove content only where it cannot be corrected, where it identifies a private individual, or where it raises a safeguarding concern.

Providers can publish a right of reply through their provider portal, and send evidence and corrections through the evidence form. Claiming is free. A right of reply can be up to 120 words, in the provider's own words. The provider terms set out how this works.
