Provider terms
Version of 24-10-2026.
About these terms
These terms set out how ETTOL, The EdTech Transparency & Oversight Leaderboard, published by GenEd Labs Ltd, works with the companies whose tools it rates. A company accepts them when it claims its tool or sends anything through the evidence form.
A rating reflects the design choices shown in published sources. It is not a measure of what a tool does in the classroom.
Before a rating is published
Before a tool's rating is first published, the company is invited to see it. The invitation gives the date by which to respond. The rating is published after that date. A response does not delay it unless ETTOL finds a clear mistake.
Claiming a tool and right of reply
- A company can claim its tool's page. Claiming includes accepting these terms.
- A company that has claimed its tool can publish a short right of reply on that page, in its own words. ETTOL does not answer it or change its meaning. ETTOL may decline to publish a reply that breaks these terms.
- A right of reply must be factual, neutral and respectful. It must not include marketing, or name or criticise another company or person.
The ETTOL badge
- A company that has claimed its tool may show the ETTOL badge on its website and in its own materials, using the code or files on its provider page.
- The badge must be used as supplied. Its wording, colours, logo and date must not be changed, and it must not be shown for a different tool.
- The badge says the tool is independently assessed on ETTOL. It does not mean ETTOL approves, certifies or recommends the tool, and it must not be presented as if it does.
- The badge and the ETTOL logo are used with ETTOL's permission. ETTOL may withdraw that permission at any time, including by switching the badge off.
- A downloaded badge shows the date it was downloaded. If ETTOL withdraws permission, or the tool is withdrawn from the board, the company removes the badge wherever it is shown.
- The live badge is loaded from ettol.ai, which sets one security cookie for people who see it. The company's own cookie notice should mention it.
- ETTOL counts where and how often the badge is shown, and when it is copied or downloaded. It does not record anything about the people who view it.
Sending evidence and corrections
- The evidence form is the way to send evidence and corrections. Messages sent another way get one reply pointing to the form.
- The form is for companies whose tools are on the board, and people acting for them.
- Each line needs the area of judgement, the type of resource, a link, the relevant passage and the date.
- Evidence must be published: on the company's website or in material its website points to, and open to anyone without an account, an email address or an access request. Official documents from government bodies, universities and schools count only where they are specifically about the tool.
- Marketing language, awards, user counts, investor names, testimonials and opinions are not evidence. A badge or certificate counts as the company's own statement that it holds it. Where the report behind it is public, ETTOL reads the report.
Disputing a line
- A company can dispute a line on its tool's page through the form, by giving the line and the reason.
- Where ETTOL accepts it as a dispute, the line is marked on the page: "The company disputes this line. It will be looked at in the tool's next review."
- After the review the mark is replaced by "Corrected on [date]" or "Looked at on [date]; unchanged".
What happens next
- What a company sends is looked at in its tool's next review. ETTOL does not set dates for reviews.
- ETTOL replies by email after that review.
- A rating stands until the tool's next review.
- Clear mistakes are corrected without waiting for the next review: the wrong tool or company named, a broken link, or a quote attributed to the wrong source.
- A newer version of a document is new evidence. It is looked at in the next review.
Withdrawing
A company can ask to withdraw its tool through the form. The tool's page is then replaced by its name and the line "Provider withdrew from the board on [date]". Whether and when a withdrawn tool is assessed again is ETTOL's decision.
Language and conduct
- All communication with ETTOL must be respectful and not abusive.
- Not acceptable: aggressive, threatening or intimidating language; personal attacks on anyone's character, competence, integrity or motives; comments about anyone's gender, age, appearance or other personal characteristics; repeated contact outside the form after being directed to it; threats used to press for a change to a rating.
- After a first, minor breach ETTOL sends one written notice. After a serious or repeated breach ETTOL stops all contact, except where the law requires a reply or a message identifies a specific factual inaccuracy. The tool's rating stays on the board.
- Threats to anyone's safety are reported to the police.
Legal letters
- A legal threat does not remove or change a rating.
- Where a letter identifies a specific factual inaccuracy, ETTOL reviews it and corrects anything found to be wrong.
- Sending a legal letter is not in itself a breach of these terms.
What ETTOL commits to
- The same process for every tool on the board.
- A reply to every submission made through the form, unless contact has been stopped under these terms.
- Ratings are never sold.
Your details and changes to these terms
- These terms sit alongside the Terms of use, which also apply to anything a company publishes on its tool's page.
- How ETTOL handles the details a company gives is set out in the Privacy notice.
- If these terms change, the change is shown on this page with its date.
