What each rating means

Choose a rating to see how a tool at that level might be designed.

These are examples of how a tool at each rating might be designed. There are other ways to reach each rating. A rating is one overall level. A tool can be at a different level in each of the five areas, and its own page shows where.

Exemplary

Humans in charge

Teachers set and approve what the tool does for each pupil. Pupils and families have choices about how the tool is used, and nothing the tool decides about a child is final until a person agrees.

Fair for every child

The company regularly checks how the tool works for different groups of children and shares the results with schools and families. The design allows for different languages, dialects and ways of thinking.

Decisions can be followed

Each decision comes with its reasons at the time. It can be questioned and changed, and it leaves a record the school can keep.

Subject content and teaching approach

The company shows where its subject content comes from and keeps an open record of what it has corrected. It explains how each subject is taught with the technology, and teachers can adapt that approach.

Improving in the open

The company publishes what it has learned, including what did not go to plan. It fixes problems where everyone can see, and says what the tool is not for.
